Adam Warlock Coming to the MCU

During the original Guardians of the Galaxy movie, fans got a look at the inner sanctum of the Collector.  Among the various Easter Eggs of his collection, the giant cocoon in the center of the room stood out above the others.  The film’s director, James Gunn, later confirmed that the cocoon was indeed a vessel containing the character Adam Warlock, which sets fans buzzing as to when the character would eventually show up.

I don’t expect you to be familiar with the character.  Just know that he’s a vitally important character in Marvel’s cosmic realm, and in the comics, he was a major player in the Infinity War storyline, housing the Soul Gem in his forehead (much like Vision does with the Mind Gem in the MCU), and is also a wielder of the Infinity Gauntlet.  He’s also intimately linked to Ayesha, the villain of the Guardians film sequel.  Needless to say, his inclusion has been expected…but it won’t be as soon as fans expect.

Talking with /Film, Gunn revealed that he almost made the upcoming Guardians Vol. 2:

“I love Adam Warlock. He’s one of my favorite characters. In all truth, I wrote an early treatment where I had Adam Warlock as a part…this is your big scoop, because I don’t think I’ve told anybody this… It was Adam Warlock. He was a big part of the screenplay and I realized it was one character too many. And I adored the character. I adored what we had done with him. I think we did something really creative and unique with Adam Warlock. But it was one character too many and I didn’t want to lose Mantis and Mantis was more organically part of the movie anyway. So I decided to save him for later.”

Gunn, now famously, had teased previously that he had to remove a character from the film due to overcrowding.  Now we know who!

Legendary Marvel producer Kevin Feige weighed in on the topic, adding that Warlock would be included in the future cosmic MCU, saying, “If he appears anywhere in the future, it’ll be in Guardians.”

Gunn recently announced that he’ll be returning to write and direct Vol. 3, something that Gunn says will finish the story of this group of characters:
