All the way back in 2014, Marvel ran a story called “Original Sin,” which featured the murder of Uatu, the Watcher, and allowed all of the hidden mysteries of the Marvel Comics Universe that he had seen to finally come to light.
In the wake of this story, Nick Fury (now famously) whispers something secret into Thor’s ear that makes Thor suddenly unworthy to wield his magical hammer, Mjolnir. This event opened the door for a new, female character (whom we eventually learned to be Jane Foster) to take up the hammer and the mantle that goes along with it. While readers have long wondered what those words could be, today’s issue of The Unworthy Thor #5 finally reveals all.
The story that was laid out through the pages of The Unworthy Thor have featured the once-Thor, now called Odinson, in search of a second hammer…one that fell into the main Marvel realm from a parallel reality once called the Ultimate Universe. Odinson fought Thanos for a chance at reclaiming his status, only to reveal the condemning words as being “Gorr was right” and choosing not to claim the Ultimate hammer for himself.
Gorr the God Butcher was a villain that arrived on the scene in 2013 with the proclamation that none of the gods were worthy, which is the same sentiment that Fury tells to Odinson, though with the secrets of the universe now exposed, Thor believes him, loses faith in himself, and believing himself to be unworthy, becomes so. It’s a classic case of mind over matter.
Now, the writer behind the whole shebang, Jason Aaron, is teasing that a new Thor…well, a new Ultimate Thor…will be entering the scene soon. I mean, we have a couple different Captain Americas, a couple different Spider-Men, a couple variants on Hulk, two characters running around in Iron Man armor these days. What do we do now? Three Thors!!! (One exclamation point for each.)
Just exactly how this Ultimate Thor will differ from the other two remains to be seen, though Aaron does confirm there will be differences. You can see what he will look like below:
