While a deal is not in place and no official word has been passed down, The Hollywood Reporter is now reporting that the Man of Steel actor is the current front-runner for the time-traveling mutant.
Many names have been thrown around as being in contention for the role lately, with a wild rumor suggesting that even Brad Pitt could be up for the part. While Stranger Things‘ sheriff, David Harbour, is on the shortlist for the character, Shannon is said to be “leading the pack.”
Cable and Deadpool have a long history together in the comics, with Cable being the son of X-Men leader Cyclops and a clone of Jean Grey. As a baby, Cable, born Nathan Christopher Summers, was infected with a techno-organic virus by Apocalypse and sent into the future where he was raised in a safe environment to control the disease’s spread. As an adult, he returned to the present to kill Apocalypse and then a whole new world of adventures began for him, not the least of which was his meeting Deadpool.
David Leitch is set to direct the sequel with Ryan Reynolds returning as the titular mutant and Atlanta actress Zazie Beetz bringing the luck-powered Domino to screen for the first time. Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and cab driver Dopinder are all expected to return, as well.
Personally, I think Harbour would make a compelling Cable. Production will begin soon, so official casting will come sooner than later.
