Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 hits theaters this May, and there’s still so much we don’t know about the movie. Like what role Rocky will play.
That’s right, Sylvester Stallone has a small, but significant role in the movie, according to director James Gunn. Not only did he tease Sly’s role during his appearance on Adam Corolla’s podcast, but he spilled the beans that another previously unannounced actor would be appearing in the film as well.
Michael Rosenbaum, best known to comic book enthusiasts and all-around nerds as Lex Luthor on TV’s Smallville.
“We do have a couple of characters who are very important to the Marvel universe, who are going to make their debut in Guardians Vol. 2, that people don’t know about,” said Gunn. “And Sylvester Stallone plays one of these characters… But I will say that my friend Michael Rosenbaum also has a pretty decent role in the movie as well and it sort of works in tandem with Sly’s character.”
After Gunn made this announcement on the podcast, Rosenbaum took to Twitter with an announcement of his own:

The fact that these characters will be linked somehow is interesting, especially as the most recent report suggest Stallone could be playing one of the Ravagers. While Gunn won’t tell us who the character is, he did offer up that Stallon’s part was small, yet key. That his character was an important, minor character with not a lot of screen time.
I think I remember reading something a while back that said the Rocky actor would be playing a member of the Nova Corps, which would be interesting. If this is the case, Rosenbaum could be playing another Corpsman…perhaps Richard Rider?
However, with the main villain being the infamous Her, aka Ayesha, aka Kismet, aka Paragon, another theory should not be overlooked. One character yet to make an appearance in the MCU, who plays a MAJOR role in the comic book version of Infinity War, who is linked intimately with Ayesha, as the Him to her Her…is Adam Warlock, whose cocoon was confirmed by Gunn among the Collector’s stash in the first film. He’s also the traditional holder of the final, yet-to-be-revealed Soul Gem. Maybe it’s a better guess to say Rosenbaum could be bringing Warlock to screen? That would be an interesting twist. Stallone could be playing a member of the Enclave, the group responsible for creating Ayesha and Adam.
All of this is pure speculation, of course, but it would explain why they are keeping the identities of these characters a secret for now. The fact that he says they are very important characters to the Marvel universe is curious. While having smaller roles in this movie, either actor could go on to reprise said role in a much larger capacity with any future movie Marvel is looking to develop.
If and when those roles are revealed, you’ll read about it here.
