If you’ve not played Shovel Knight, there may be something wrong with you. Of course, I say that lovingly.
But the game is a solid throwback title with all new gameplay and story. It comes as no surprise that the character has so many fans that he’s fostered two sequels and an amiibo.
What does come as a little bit of a surprise (at least to me) is how Yacht Club Games, the games developer, really seems to like Nintendo. I say surprising because Nintendo hasn’t been the go-to system for third-party support lately. Hopefully, with the release of the Switch, all of that will change.
The newest Shovel Knight game, Specter of Torment, will make its debut on the Switch first (toward the end of March) before shovel-jumping to the other systems in April.
What makes SoT so great is that you can now play as Specter Knight, a previous enemy of the titular hero. Also with this update, the game will transition a little. The original game will receive a subtitle: Shovel of Hope, and will no longer require the assistance of an amiibo to offer co-op play. The new game, the original, and the middle game (Plague of Shadows) will all come complete in Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove.
