In the 90s, fighting games were all the rage, and the two biggest ones were Mortal Kombat & Street Fighter. MK was pretty graphic, and if your parents frowned on spines being pulled from your opponent’s body, your game of choice, by default, was Street Fighter 2.
Capcom is capitalizing on the throwback nostalgia that the Switch seems to be basing it’s entire marketing/existence on be releasing an updated version of the Street Fighter classic: Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers. Of course, as should be done for a new generation, the game will be tweaked for a modern audience with updated graphics and added features.
Thanks to certain game boxes appearing in the wild (albeit dummy boxes), one of those has now been confirmed as first-person mode, called “Unleash! Ha”DO”ken”. If the mode lets you play as the character, using the Joy-Con controllers in your fists to punch your opponent in a Wii Sports/Punch Out sort of attack, this would be a cool new feature, and it’s this kind of innovative thinking with classic franchises that will keep third-party devs making games for Switch and players excited about things yet to come.
Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers doesn’t have a release date yet, but fans should expect it sooner than later.
