Yesterday, word came that Jason Reitman has been quietly developing a new Ghostbusters movie in secret. Why do you care? Because he’s the son of Ivan Reitman, the director of the original two movies.
No casting has been announced and the movie is yet to go into production, but we already have our first teaser, and it’s a little nostalgic in the vein of Stranger Things. Check it out:
With the coming of a third Bill & Ted movie and now this, the little boy inside of me is squealing with delight. As a parent, I’ve made it a priority to expose my kids to all of these great films of the past that elicit such nostalgic joy and pride, and my kids are more complete pop-culture enthusiasts as a result. Naturally, my son has gravitated to these movies more than my daughter (and flicks like Back to the Future, Ferris Bueller, and Beetlejuice) but at least she won’t grow up to be one of those kids that has never seen Star Wars.
There’s a great write up on EW‘s site, but what you really need to know is this:
“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans,” Reitman says. “This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”
Sony Pictures has dated the film for Summer 2020, with plans to start shooting in a few months.
