Disney’s animated Aladdin film was one of the hallmarks of my childhood. Of course, the success of that movie was due in no small part to Robin Williams voicing the Genie. And of course the soundtrack was phenomenal.
When they announced they’d be making a live-action version, of course I was intrigued. Then they announced that Will Smith would be playing the iconic Genie. I have high hopes for that. It could be amazing.
Today, we get our first look at some of the characters and the tease we do get seems pretty spot-on to the animated version. I do like when the adaptations remain faithful, but they should offer something new, as well, so long-time fans have something to digest.
We don’t see much more than a CGI Iago (the bird) and a glimpse of the Cave of Wonders and Aladdin grabbing the lamp. No signs of the Genie, and I think it’s safe to say that the success or failure of this movie will depend largely on how great they capture that character. Will he be CG? Will he even be blue? I’m sure we’ll find out closer to Christmas as the film is set to be a big summer kick-off next year.
What do you think of the teaser?
Aladdin will get you wishing when it hits theaters May 24, 2019.
