For my money, there isn’t anything Marvel does better than hire the right people to make their movies.
Nowhere is this more evident than James Gunn (director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies) and Scott Derrickson, who directed Dr. Strange.
Derrickson is a rare breed of director that just knows how to tell a kick-ass story with supernatural elements. Sinister & Deliver Us From Evil are prime examples. It’s really easy to make a bad horror movie, but Derrickson keeps nailing it. If my novel series ever got picked up for a movie, Derrickson would be my prime choice to direct.
All of that to say, if you haven’t seen Marvel’s latest outing in their cinematic universe, you’re missing out. Dr. Strange is surreal and visceral, it’s funny and gripping. What Guardians did for space, this movie does for magic and alternate universes.
Well, if you did miss it in theaters, today you can be vindicated, as it releases on Blu-ray and DVD. Run, don’t walk, to your nearest retailer and pick up your copy. Or, if you’re on a budget right now, skip on down to your nearest Red Box and grab this flick.
You’ll be glad you did.
